# A Learning-Rate-Gated Failure of GRPO in a Small Language and Vision-Language Model Web Agent: A Controlled Null and Its Mechanism

Studies a controlled setting where GRPO fails to improve a strong small web agent and can reduce text-track performance. Matched reachable-reward tasks and component grafting distinguish limited optimization headroom from learning-rate-dependent failure mechanisms.
